OK, my second computer, a quite basic Acer Desktop on XP has started to give me some grief.
It starts up OK, goes through to the Windows page then the screen goes black and continually dimly flashes with the monitor light going on and off.
My only option is to close the computer down, and fire it up again, it does then go past the flashing monitor stage to a blue disc checking page, I let that run and all is well until the next close down.
I have tried a system restore, I have updated the graphic drivers, and I have changed the monitor, all to no avail.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

We've got an acer and although it's not the same problem we have a similar problem at the moment - mine occurs when the pc is being 'overworked' - the hard drive stops 'whirring' and the screen freezes - I have to let the whole thing cool down for well over an hour before I can turn it on again otherwise it says that there is a problem booting from disk (needless to say I ordered myself a new mac last night) - hope you get your problem fixed0

UPDATE:
Found the problem, it was AVG 8.5, I got rid of it, the problem went away.
I have installed Windows Essentials, the computer now fires up OK, it also closes down much quicker.
I hope this may be of help to someone else.0
