Car roof leaks.... help!

After my poor old car has been rained upon, whoever sits in the passenger seat can usually look forward to a small shower whenever I take a bend.

I suspect the sun roof is leaking in some way but, as the car has only a year or so's life left in it anyway, I don't want the problem of an expensive repair.

Is there some quick and effective fix available?

I never open the sun roof in any case and I'm wondering whether there might be some kind of 'magic spray' or suchlike which will do the trick.

  • You don't say which car? It could be that the drain(s) are blocked which are supposed to prevent the accumulation of water to do what you describe. Either that or the seals are shot. Seals are prone to sustain damage if the sunroof isn't operated regularly e.g. even through the winter. If you're not bothered about appearance and the car only has 12 months left yto live why not try some outdoor silicane sealant around he seals?

As 'oldage' says more than likely the drains are blocked, open the roof and at the front corners there should be a drain hole each side.
slowly pour some water in that area if it does not go then they are blocked, the easiest way to unblock them is with the type of wire that you hang net curtains up with,
gently poke the wire down through the hole moving it up and down, pull it all the way out now and again to clean any muck off,

when it looks like you are all the way down get some warm soapy water and again pour into the hole,it should drain away,
you may have to repeat this more than once

Good to see these ideas. This affects my old Saxo, too.

Any other thoughts very welcome, especially if anyone knows this model.

If the car is an old banger, you could always seal it with duck tape? They do a really thick, sticky transparent one which might be best?

Or there is a produce used for sealing caravans and motorhomes called caratape which will be a bit more expensive (but you won't need very much). http://www.your-timeout.co.uk/index.htm
  • It'll probably be a Renault...

If it you think it's the rubber seals that are causing the leak try spraying some Silicone Spray on the rubber, you can buy this from good motor factors. The leaking roof is a common problem on MR2s with T Bar roofs. The silicone definately works on those as I was recommended to use it when mine had problems and it worked on that
