I've an old summer (thin) quilt that I've decided to replace. However, am a real 'make do and mend' girl and know that you bright people will tell me how I can reuse it
I was wondering if I could make mattress topper with it?
Thanks in advance for your help!!!!0 -
Hi there
I just put our spare quilt under the bottom sheet makes winter extra snuggly n warm
You could always fit elastics to the corner to anchor it under the mattress-6 -8 -3 -1.5 -2.5 -3 -1.5-3.50 -
agree with Mrs M or you could
make several draught excluders
keep as a lap snuggle for the living room with nice cover
pet beds
line curtains
use a cushion padding
cant think of anything else but will add if I do0 -
mattress topper certainly
quilted throw - cover with fabric and do knots in a nice pattern that go tho' to tie the layers together
kids sleeping bag - nice to snuggle into and read a book - cut out animal shape maybe and cover with some fabric or animal fleece - leopard print? dog paws?
Bolster pillow to go across the bed or make day bed cushions - make cylindrical cover
I'm sure the guys out here wil have loads of ideas!0 -
Thanks for the ideas! I think I'm going to try a mattress topper as OH wanted us to buy a really squidgy mattress but this way we can have a firmer/ cheaper one and he still gets his squidginess. Thanks for the tip about elastic, I was wondering how to affix it exspecially as I have a king size mattress and small double bed!0

Hi redfraggle,
I always recycle old duvets by using them as mattress covers. Lovely and snuggly especially at this time of year when it's getting colder. There's an earlier thread with lot of ideas that may help so I've added your thread to it to keep the replies together.

Any of the above, or if you have a loft you can insulate your loft flap with it. I still can't believe the difference that made when we did it!0

Now thats just given me an idea - I've been wondering if theres any possible way to deal with my loft hatch - as my loft ladder is fixed to it. Hmmm....now wondering if I could stand on my stepladder ready for when I use the pole to get that hatch shut again and manage to manoeuvre an old duvet into place to cover it.....could be a thought.
Fortunately - my loft hatch is over my landing - and not in a room - so the air coming down from there is heading into my main area (rather than a room) IYSWIM. Still worth a try though.0 -
ceridwen, we have loft ladders as well. what I did was attack it to the flap on the opposite side to the ladder. I put a loop on the end of the duvet and after I've used the loft I use the pole thingy that you use to put the ladders back to manouvre the duvet into position before closing the hatch quickly! I'm sure there's a more intelligent way of doing it, but that works fine for us. We live in a bungalow and the loft hatch is in the hall right next to the door to every room that leads off it. We used to find there was a current between the loft and the front door, and even after the front door was properly insulated you could feel the cold air if you stood underneath the hatch. Not any more!
I've just read that back to myself and it didn't make the slightest bit of sense. Do you get what I'm on about?0 -
I second the ideas to use it as a mattress topper! Just put an old duvet on top of my mattress on Thursday, seems fairly well anchored by the fitted sheet, well the bed feels so soft and is extra warm, it's lovely, now going to do the same for the children's beds with spare duvets - we often have a lot of their friend or ours staying over so seem to have a huge amount of bedding, so plenty of spare duvets, all guests will just have to use our inflatable camping beds and covers for the winter!GC Oct £387.69/£400, GC Nov £312.58/£400, GC Dec £111.87/£4000
