My old duvet is wrapped around my boiler as makeshift insulation- perhaps something similar?

I'm afraid the duvet is the synthetic variety as I allergic to feathers, so I think the composting idea is out (I'd like to see the worms get their teeth into that!) There's some great ideas here though, so thanks to one and all.

Roll the duvet into a sausage shape - tie around the middle and ends and then roll it up in a piece of nice material- tie ribbons around to secure it and you have a bolster or draught excluder etc.

If you're into gardening it could be useful to overwinter a delicate species eg some of the big tropical plants by wrapping it with the quilt. Maybe bung it over the top of the greenhouse if it's getting too hot in the heatwave. Or over the top of the conservatory if that's too hot - if you do this it'll also give your neighbours something to talk about:rolleyes:.

If you have any v.small kiddies who come to your house you could spread it out on the floor then put a blanket on top, then the little ones have a safe and soft spot to play on.

Yes- my local RSPCA was actively looking for old duvets, so I would call yours and see if they want it.
BTW - it's really good of you not just to throw it out but to think of others.

If its still whole, but has lost some of its 'loft', use it directly on top of your mattress as a mattress protector and put your sheet over it, makes it quite nice and snuggly in the winter time.

Yes, loads have gone on my freecycle, and people sometimes advertise for duvets as pet bedding etc. Worth a try.
