They have to be 45mm x 35mm. None of my editing software does this. I have an HP deskjet 840c (still going strong!) and an Epsom Photo R200.
Any suggestions welcome - can't risk wasting anymore £3.50s in the booth at Tescos.

MS Word:
Import your photo and click on it. You should see the Pictur Toolbar. If not, right-click on the picture and select "Show Picturre Toolbar"
Use the crop tool to get the required head and shoulders bit.
Right-click on the photo again, select "Format picture" and click on the size tab. Remove the tick next to "lock aspect ratio" and enter the size you need.
Go to File > Page Setup and change the paper size to that of your photo paper and cut them out after they're printed.0 -
Interesting thread here on the subject:

HTHIt could have been worse. At least source code's not combustible, or you can bet somebody at McAfee would have lit it.0 -

I find that when I click on 'File', 'Print' a pop up window shows how the graphic will look on an A4 page and gives me the option to change the sizes to whatever I want... I don't know if your printer software is the same .......I'm Glad to be here... At my age I'm glad to be anywhere!!
I'm not losing my hair... I'm getting more head!!0 -
We had ours done in Jessops. They use a hefty digital camera and you see the pic on their machine before its printed out.
We decided to do this after spending ages taking our own pics and printing at highest resolution (OH works in digital photography) only to have the first lot rejected as not good enough(they scan your photos to make the passport).
Homemade ones were fine for liesure centre pass cards and general ID cards though.0 -
The UK Passport Office says that photos should "be printed professionally", as "photographs printed at home are not likely to be of an acceptable quality". See the guidelines here (PDF download): http://www.passport.gov.uk/downloads/PLE_04Eng-Photo.pdf0

Brilliant thanks a lot and thanks to everyone else for their suggestions.0 -
I used photoshop to crop and shrink the photo to the right size, then pasted 8 onto a 6x4 background, transferred to memory card and printed it off at Boots for the princely sum of 49p. I know not everyone has photoshop, but other editors will do the trick. You get professional print quality this way, for very little cost.
