moved home, very confused

Ok erm i dont know where to start but basically at the start of october moved into a new home and have never had to deal with electricity or water bills. Now i do, and i moved in and singed a paper with the landlord about electricity and water. When i moved in i didn't actually call any suppliers and put anything on my name or parents names.

Now its been 2 months and i think i have been stupid and i didn't even take a meter reading when i moved in. What was i suppose to do? Can someone educate me on this matter, it would be very much appreciated.

Thanks

  • take meter readings
    find out name of supplier/s
make sure you are putting money aside for bills, I'd suggest £25pw until you know what they are going to be. Hopefully this will be much more than you need on an ongoing basis & it will help towards what you have already used & it will stop you getting too much of a shock when they do arrive and they will soon. You shouldn't need anywhere near as much for a whole year but until you get used to what things cost, this is a safe option.

The risk you have is that you will now pay for any usage between when the previous occupant moved out and you moved in.

next time, when you take possession of a property from a landlord, take meter readings and give them to your landlord immediately, preferably have them noted on your lease as moving in readings. Call the supplier and give them the same entry readings. Do the it the other way around when you leave a property. This will stop any arguments from even arsing at any future date over what is due.
