Tax Rebate!!!!

Hello. My husband was made redundant in the middle of april and as i was not working he had to sign on jobseekers allowance 8 weeks later as he could not find work. He was paid redundancy money and weeks in leu so in total he had earned £7300, but was taxed over £2000. I have been lucky enough to find a job but its only 16 hours a week i started on the 1st oct and my husband was given another p45 from the jobcentre when he signed off. My husband sent parts 2&3 of both p45s to hmrc along with a p50 as we are due back just over £1600. This was recieved by hmrc on the 6th oct. My husband rang them them the next week to ask how long it would take and he was told 4 weeks. 4 weeks past and we got nothing so he rang them back and he was told it would be with us in a few weeks. We still didnt hear anything so he rang them back on monday only to be told that the p45 parts 2&3 from the benifit office did not have the correct figures on it so they needed comformation of how much benifits he had recieved. My husband offered to send them P45 1A and letters hed had from the benifit office when he had signed on which both confirmed the ammount he was paid. They said that was fine so he posted them straight away. He rang them back this morning to find out how much longer his claim would take and he was told that it wouldnt be looked at until the begining of jan because of back log! I know that they are very busy but we sent all the required information to them and its not our fault that the jobcenter gave him a p45 with wrong figures on it. If they had told us the first time he phoned we could of sent extra information 7 weeks ago. And how can the jobcentre get away with giving p45s that are not correct? This has now left us with no money at all for xmas as we were relying on this rebate and we were told we would have it in time. I now have no option but to take out a provident loan and i dont think its fair because all we need is my husbands money that is rightfully his! Is there anything we can do?

  • I would make a complaint to HMRC. This link explain how:

My advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience.

    seriously?

you'd take a provvy loan rather than have a credit crunch christmas?

I know it might not be palatable but surely beans on toast and morcambe and wise reruns on the bbc, if you have each other, and better than provvie?

New house. Bigger mortgage. MFWB after I have my buffer cash in place.

    Hi there,

In regards to the provvy loan, you are aware of the APR on those things, aren't you? ("Typical 272.2% APR") I'm not being patronising, I'm just checking. Seriously, I would only ever consider a provident loan if I had no clothes on my back, not a scrap of food in the cupboard, and my utilities were about to be shut off. Even then, I'd think very hard about it. And I'm not being uppity here, my mum regularly used the provvy as a single mum with 3 kids, and to this day, she is still deeply humiliated by the whole process. Thankfully, she's never had to "go there" in over 10 years now.

I feel for you, especially if you have kids (do you?), as they're unlikely to understand why Christmas has been 'cancelled'. There are other ways and means to give your family a good Christmas though, namely:

    - cutting back on the food/gifts/luxuries you'd usually buy (obviously!!). If you do have kids, try to limit them to one or two 'big' presents (within budgetary reasons), and look for alternative ways to make the day fun and enjoyable. Again, not being funny, but there's much more to Christmas than material goods. Get the board games out and have a good old-fashioned time :o

    - use a credit card. I am NOT condoning getting into debt here, especially given your employment predicament, but please consider it as a much cheaper alternative to a provvy loan, if you're really dead-set on going down the borrowing route. Limit the spending as much as you can, and pay off the full balance at the earliest opportunity.

    - make the most of family and friends to keep yourself busy over the Christmas period. Something as simple as having your Christmas dinner in a family/friend's home will save you a packet within itself, and you won't have to lose out on the experience.

    - keep chasing the tax rebate! It might arrive just in time.

    Best of luck x

  • No we are not still on benifits. I am actualy working to support my family. My husband has worked full time for 22 years and i worked full time till i had my first child. We were on benifits for 7 weeks only because we had to. I get what you are all saying but why should we have to suffer this christmas just because hmrc are taking so long to pay us money which is ours. How would u feel if someone had £1600 pounds that was yours and u had nothing? I was only asking if there was anything i could do about it i didnt expect people to call me a chavv and tell me i needed to spend money on my life!
  • Make a complaint as detailed above, but sorry I do not hold out much hope of you getting the money before January. There is a great scam within the inland revenue, if you owe then you will be charged interest if they owe you? Tough!

You need to make a formal complaint to the District Inspector of your OH's tax office requesting payment in 10 days.

People are desperately trying to stop you applying for a loan from a company whose interest rates are appalling and who will have you pay through the nose for any loan you take out, or at least imploring you to do something constructive with the money besides a few Christmas gifts.

If you want to get on your high horse about a name you think you got called (and actually didn't, by the way) rather than take the time to think through what they have said to see if there was something you missed in the middle of your leaping about over the word "chav" then its your life.

I dont think anyone was suggesting you were a "chav". Think it was just some friendly advice incase you ended up getting into problems paying back a loan with huge APR. I dont know if there is much you can do about it apart from wait on them refunding the money to you. Hope you get it all sorted out.

  • Please don't get a Provident loan, They really are ripoff merchants. After I was widowed I brought up my kids on Widowed Mother's pension. It was tough, but we managed. There were no frills, however, no expensive toys and no designer gear.

Only once did I deal with the Provident, for £100 of vouchers. When I worked out the interest I was paying I was shocked and paid it off in short order. Never Again. I still get offers from them ,but they just get binned.

Once they get hold of you they don't let up. Please don't let them get their hooks into you.

    Cheers, HG
