OFGEM are not there to directly help or look after customers. They are there to regulate the industry. They are therefore not directly answerable to consumers. That used to be energywatches job but so overwhelmed were they with complaints that they were scrapped!
What we do need is a nationalised energy industry which exists to service the best interests of the UK populace in terms of performance, safety and innovation.
Government could regulate and monitor this single entity.
OFGEM seems like a good idea and it may have worked in its earlier days but it is now a danger to the public. It seeks to continually cut cut and cut operating expenditure of utilities and there is only so much you can cut before the public interest is not served and accidents happen. We are there now.Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0 -

By analogy, it's like the Police deciding that they will no longer investigate Car thefts, then we get a huge problem with massive increase in car thefts and people getting injured by Joyriders. When asked about this, the Police say "sorry it's no longer in our remit." By removing it from their remit it not only means joyrtiders can do what they want and other adverse consequences arise too.
And your solution to this would be to scrap the police, and replace them with a new body for investigating car thefts.
What happens to all the other crimes the police investigate?
Surely a better system would be to either
a) Put car theft back into the police remit
b) Create a new Car Theft Investigation Unit without scrapping the police.0 -

Please stick to the debate which is about ofgem and check out the meaning of analagous. Ofgem relinquished their powers to regulate NPower EDF, British GAs etc, it would have been better if they had never relinquished the powers in the first place but as they haven't asked for the right to have those powers reinstated let's have a new regulatory body that wants to regulate those companies instead.0 -

Thanks for the links - I think they provide more evidence to justify the scrapping of OFGEM0 -
The electricity and gas companies are paying for oil and gas and coal now at rates that were negotiated as far back as 5 years ago.
Question you need to ask is how/what do you think that the oil supply and price is going to be like in 5 years time?
Another question we need to ask is will we even Need oil in 5 years time ? I do wonder when exactly the breaking point will come when the majority tires of being held to ransom by the minority. (In any given situation, really...)0
