Being paid by bank transfers

hope this hasn't already been asked - I couldn't see that it had been.

I normally accept payments by cheque or Paypal, but I've seen auctions where people accept payment straight into their bank account (this is usually free, so it would be nice for me to use this instead of Paypal!)

What I want to know is, would anyone be able to misuse my account number/sort code (that I provided them with so they could pay me) to do anything nasty to my account? I know about identity theft stuff, but surely it can't be that "secret" if they print it on all your cheques?

I'll ask my bank too.

same here very few people pay that way,unfortunatly paypal is the populer choice(just as ebay would like it).
