Computer start up problem - need help

Hi,

This morning when I started up my computer it had a few boxes to say it couldn't find start up. I can go into word etc but when I log onto the internet it won't connect. Internet connection is fine as I'm using DH laptop now. I scanned CC and in the issues it said to delete the registry value as 123\shell\open could not be located. I have no idea how to do that.

Avast said I had a trojan horse in win setup or something similar and I was unable to get rid of it. Do you think I might have a virus? Any help would be appreciated - I know it's nightime over there but will wait patiently. :p

Hello long distance moneysaver. If avast says you have trojan, then it doesn't sound good. Do you know how to get into safe mode (F8 at startup), and then try an avast scan.

If that can't clear it up, we will probably need some more clarification and specifics to help..

XP/2000/ME or 98? If XP or ME, then system restore might help.

    (CC?, scanned with what, Avast?)

Avast said I had a trojan horse in win setup

Which trojan, what is the full path and filename of the file?

Is avast constantly running and automatically updated?
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

The program that seems to have the problem is rundll. We don't know what it is so we are searching for files now.

Atm we r three chicks here :D and don't have 1 techy brain between us. We moved the trojan to chest. It was net.dot. Thanks for answering. :A

If the trojan has been picked up by avast, and is in the chest, then you should be ok.

Do you know how to get into safe mode, and do a full scan?

Are you still getting some symptoms, other than lack of internet.

If you could be specific in your answers it would help diagnosis. Is net.dot the filename it picked up? What was the name (avast alias) of the trojan?

rundll and dotnet are microsoft terms and files, but virus writers sometimes use similar names to confuse people..

We have Windows XP 2002. We tried to restore but wouldn't work. No other symptoms, other than lack of internet. The name of the (avast alias) was Win 32.
new.doc is the program that has the error. Well this is what we think.

    It says Error loading C:\PROGRA 1\NEWDOT 1|NEWDOT 2.DLL
    Access is denied.

Try add/remove programs in control panel:

    http://www.new.net/help_faq.tp#p4

Does the C:\PROGRAM files\NEWDOT 1 directory or something similar exist, and if so does the directory have a recent date (I'm trying to find out if this was installed recently)..

Problem is that if Avast has half cleaned it up, it may have left your networking setup in a state. Add/remove programs is the best way to remove it.
