Michael's World Cup Guide to Where to Live

I am thinking about moving and looking at several roads - sometimes it is hard to see if a road is suitable or not, there a little clues like the age of the cars, excessive leaded glass / replacement upvc windows etc but all that is now redundant.

For the next few weeks all you need to do is count the proportion of cars sporting cross of st george flags - more than a few percent and the road can be rejected and even more importantly flags fluttering out of / covering windows - even one in the road is probably all the sign you need to say no...
I think....

I really like your thinking and can see what you are saying!

I've seen 2 in the windows at the top of our street - no cars but we are on a main road... and funnily enough - it is the top of the street that has seen the most "activity" shall we say...

Sorry but I think this is a useless post and can only disagree. I think you are pretty stupid actually, to base your buying decisions on whether your neighbours like football or not. I for example, am the very pinnacle of respectability in my neighbourhood, I am well educated, I have a good job, I go to church, do charity work, give blood, and donate to charity - oh, and my kids all have great manners. We like football, we have flags, we have football parties, but we are great neighbours and all our neighbours like us.

Oh and ages of cars means nothing. Some people prefer to have a nice life and a lovely home and 4 holidays a year than a flash motor!

that said, now everyone can go and place a token flag outside all the houses on the street as a deterrent for any dullard nimby's who might be looking to buy in the area.....

Completely disagree with OP, it may have been just a bit of fun comment, but its actually quite offensive.

I was on Shad thames yesterday for the Cuban festival, and I was actually quite surprised to see a lot of england flags hanging off the balconies all up and down the riverside.

where a 'respectable' elderly lady (who proabably wouldn't have an england flag flying from her bedroom window) got jailed for breaking the terms of her asbo by terrifying her neighbours?

My cars got flags on too but you wouldn't know doing a drive past as it's in the garage when not in use.

My next door neighbours got a small Cross of St George in his garden too. I was talking to him last Tuesday afternoon and he said, " I can tell you where I was exactly 62yrs ago at this time." I looked very puzzled and said, "where?" He replied, "Walking up a beach in Normandy with the second wave in".

Certainly not the type of 88yr old neighbour you'd want I suppose!! Personally, I've found him and his wife to be the best neighbours you could possibly ask for.

But if the flags put you off - your loss.

I agree with the OP - I like a quiet life. Even if some of the other people who also like a quiet life.= happen to score 9/10 on my Fruitcake Detector, at least they are unlikely to play loud Popular Music at night, because they (we!) are too old, decripit and sad to enjoy that sort of thing.

Now, how about a cup of tea and a nice bit of Mahler 9? (turned down so it doens't make the whole street throb, of course:))
