Help and advice with buying a 4 wheel drive please

  • Thanks everyone, winter tyres sound like a good idea. Daft question but do they fit on any car?

Hubby wants me in something big for going round the country lanes and through ford etc - I've got a few miles of windey roads that don't get gritted before I get to a main road- and is edging towards a Toyota Rav 4. I like them but am worried that the cost of running it will mean I'm more limited with where I can go. At the moment I drive to various play groups every day but may have to stay home more if I had a 4x4 so really torn.

Need something safe and reliable ad able to tackle ice but also cheap. I suppose you always have to compromise somewhere.

If I went for the winter tyres option which 5 door safe reliable car would people recommend?

    Thanks.

Winter tyres may be a lot better on ice & stuff, but will they get you up your track if it snows????
I bought a new Grand Vitara 2 years ago, for £10.5 (should have been 13.5k but it had 28 miles on it from test driving so I got 3k off:D
Not had a moments bother with it.
Is new an option (I personally think when you put lack of garage bills & reliability in it balances out).
  • Where the hell has this track appeared from?

OP, what is your budget? Set that first and then look for advice. How deep does the ford get normally and is there a way round it should there be alot of rainfall?

Winter tyres come in all sizes, but you have to buy a set of wheels and tyres on top of the cost of the car.

    Hello,

I'm no good with cars so really need some advice.

At the moment I've got a 3 door pugeot 206 but with a new baby and living down country lanes I really need something 5 door and 4 wheel drive so I can get out and about in the ice and snow (last year I couldn't get my car up our track for a week because of the snow). I'm reluctant to buy a big 4x4 for economical and environmental reasons but want to feel safe and to be able to drive on ice.

I want to spend about 5k. Any ideas?

    Thanks

.this is true of most petrol engined 4x4's in reality, no doubt someone will be along in a minute who gets nearly 40 from theirs.

Not quite 40mpg but more than 25 :D

I've just picked up an Audi A4 quattro 2.0T and so far it's sitting at around 31mpg. It'll probably drop a bit as it gets colder but I doubt it'll drop too far below 30mpg.

Whats the 206 worth? tell us age model (engine) and mileage. Maybe you can keep it and had a Rav 4 (or what ever) for when things get tough? Because you will save fuel and depreciation by not driving the big car on fine days. There are of course associated costs with having another car insurance etc.
  • Apologies them Mrs E.
