Blackboard/magnetic paint..how many coats?

Options
I started painting this a few nights ago and am still painting!..roughly now 9-10 coats and although magnetic it wont hold up a bit of paper without the magnet coming off grr..so i have this huge black mark on the wall and not sure if i should keep going with it?
Anyone know how many you need to do?
Thanks

  • Hi, gabyjane.

I was thinking of getting this paint too, but it doesn't sound too good. Sorry if I'm suggesting the obvious, but could the magnet you're using be the problem?
Does the tin say how many coats to apply?
I want to use this stuff on the inside of a cupboard door. Please let us know how it turns out for you. Sorry I can't offer any experience of using it myself.

Hi well just tried the lst coat i did and although the magnet sticks and it now holds paper it isn't particularly strong (tried 2 diff magnets so it's the paint!) It looks better though as i did the first couple of coats with a brush then carried on with my trusty paint pad and its gone lovely and smooth..i have now done about 11 coats!..i mix well too as know it is full of the particles so will just keep going with it i guess (gone this far!)..on the tin it just says do coats and redo after 3 hours..touchable in 1..hmm ill let you know tom when it will have had its 12th coat!
Looks nice as a blackboard though!
I was going to do a huge chekerboard calendar type thing on the wall to chalk on..maybe i should have done that?!
  • Thanks for the link. We'll be buying it at the weekend.
Now I know how many coats it'll take!!! :D

A silly question, but are you sure it is not just the weight of the magnet pulling it off.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

Hi no it's not, the magnet on the fridge abviously sticks really well but this doesn't (not that i expect it that good!)..it holds paper now which is all i wanted really so i reckon at least 14 coats eek!..its still masked up despite the tin saying remove as soon as painted?? hmm we will see what happens when i peel it all off!
    Thanks

If you look at this one it says it's one coat.

Who has no experience of using blackboard paint, but years ago DD1 was given some "blackboard" on sticky back plastic IYSWIM and we used it for years on the fridge for shopping lists, and now it's on a kitchen cabinet door (peeled off fridge and moved there when the fridge died). Has to be over 20 years old now, and still going strong!

Hi thanks for the reply but that is just for blackboard paint..i have the magnetic one and blackborad in one. One coat of this will certainly not allow you to get the magnetism!
