Barclays Reserve Usage

Hello everyone,

I'm not sure if this is necessarily something which I can claim back. Me and my partner have a joint Barclays current account; it's main use is for us to put our money in for rent and bills. When we first set it up around March time, we both were told that we had a £150 limit on our account if there was a problem with the rent so we could fall back on it.

Today I went to transfer our rent money into the estate agents and the lady behind the counter told us we didn't have enough money, even though both me and my partner had transfered £250 each the day before. She showed us our statement, and £80 had been taken out of our account a few days previous due to a reserve usage fee. She explained that the £150 wasn't an overdraft facility, if we go into it, and don't pay it back within 5 working days, every 5 days we get a £22 charge.

I'm not sure this is something which we can claim back; she also mentioned this would happen regardless if we were £1 over or £100 over.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Georgina

  • I would perhaps argue the case with Barclays that their explanation to you was misleading and erroneous and that you would like them to refund the charge and remove the personal reserve from your account.

  • I have an appointment booked with them tomorrow afternoon, so I could bring it up in conversation; I just don't think they'll turn around and say "Oh we're sorry, here's a refund" - It might be worth a try though.

    Thank you.

    Thank you.

Explain what you understood and if they say no ask for their complaints procedure. Personally I would have do it in writing rather than face to face
