Hi all,
Not sure if this is any help to anyone but there are loads of podcasts that offer short stories etc for free. There is a mixture of quality but part of the fun is that there is an opportunity for community feedback in each episode??? Try for example
http://pseudopod.org/ (horror related stories)
http://escapepod.org/ (Sci firelated stories) I am particularly partial to the Union Dues series. (the stories recently have been very short flash stories (about 10 mins long ) as the podcaster has been unwell but things seem to be going great guns again now so dont be put off if they seem a bit short of content over the last few months

http://librivox.org/
"LibriVox provides free audiobooks from the public domain".
Haven't checked it out fully, so apologies if there's a catch!
Have used LibriVox for a while now and love it, especially for short stories and poetry. Some of the readers aren't very good, am not too keen on some of the Californian accents.(but that's just me, maybe other people don't mind!) You get to know the readers you enjoy listening to and can look out for their contributions. Also download lots of stuff to cds for a friend who is blind, so it's a fantastic resource in that way. Thanks for the post again- great reminder for anyone who'd like to give it a try!0 -
audioedition.org wrote: »Just an update. If you haven't tried it yet, it's great. Go to your local library's site, and see if they are a member of www.netlibrary.org and/or www.overdrive.com These sites provide copyrighted audiobooks free to library patrons. Your library has to be a member, and you have to sign in from your librarys site with your library card to download materials. They have member libraries in many countries. NetLibrary is available where I am, and it's not bad. The main problem is that their audiobooks are all in one big file per book, so you get an audio file on average 10 hours long. Better make sure your player has book marking. NetLibrarys files are DRM protected as well. You are only able to listen during lending period, no CD burning, etc, etc.. That is why they are ABLE to offer those books for no charge, just a different means of lending. Check out my list of free audiobook places at www.audioedition.org/services/free/ I update it all the time.
I'm an audiobooks' freak. I enjoy free stuff at http://www.podiobooks.com/ and free audio drama/ fiction novels at http://www.newfiction.com/0 -
Hi everyone,
I've been part of a very innovative project involving audio books.
It's a musical fantasy audio book. Innovative because it's incorporated with graphics and photos of dragons. wolves, dark mercenaries...and strong music backgrounds presented in videos.
You can download the videos for FREE or watch in streaming mode directly from the musicaltales.com website.
Take a look for yourself.0 -
Does anyone know where I can get, preferably free, Lord of the Flies and The Crucible on audio? My daughter is reading them for GCSE English and I would like to find her a version to go onto her IPOD that is glued into her ears!! I actually caught her listening to the GCSE German podcasts I found her the other night!!!!!

I came across a site called Open Culture that has a really long list of free audio books. The page is something of a meta collection, and it focuses on the "great books." Seemed worth a mention.
I wanted to include a link to the page, but the site won't let me. To find this page, google "Free Audio Books: Download Great Books for Free"0 -
I've just discovered that my local library (Richmond upon Thames) has online audiobook services.
You can listen to books online using Naxos Spoken Word Online.
This service allows you to listen to hundreds of books online from home or at the library.
If you're accessing this service from home, you will need to enter your library card number to login.
I discovered this by just entering mp3 into their search box so might be worth a try with other library websites as well.0 -
I listen to an audiobook on Naxos last night (Dickens Great Expectations) and notice these aren't available for downloading onto you computer, just for listening through your computer. Not bad though if you just want to listen to these at home.0

Just spotted another free audio books site free-audio-books.co.uk. This one's seems to mostly have the librivox audio books on it - they've cornered the market on free audiobooks. But this site's much better categorized and the audio player allows you to whizz past the ubiquitous chapter intros (the librivox intro is burned into my memory forever).0
