What did the advert say? Did the car have a service/mot? Did the garage say these faults would have been picked up on a service?
There was the caravan case on here, which was also a private sale, and the buyer took the seller to the small claims court and won.
If it was described as being in good working order, then I would be taking the car back to them, and insisting on a full refund, or at the very least asking them to pay 75% of the repair cost.
How much is this repair going to cost?Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -

Have a look at the preceding posts. Caveat Emptor applies. This is an open forum, anyone can post and I just did !0 -
next time mate take a mechanic with you to check the car before you purchase it
You do have legal rights, however it is a difficult route to go down...
Using Caveat emptor you do have rights, the goods you purchased must be of "merchantable quality". It is very difficult to impliment this warrenty though.0 -

Warranty, what warranty? This was a private purchase. The idea of 'merchantable quality' does not apply to private purchases."You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"0 -

You would think.... but this is NOT always the case. In a private sale, if the goods not true to their description, then court action can be taken, and in many cases the buyer has one.
This is exactly what we told the guy who had sold the caravan (Caveat Emptor), so when the guy he sold it to went ahead with the court proceedings, we all thought that as it was a private sale, he was fine, as he believed the description he gave was accurate to what he sold. We were ALL surprised that the buyer one the case!
Caveat Emptor is what people like to think, but isn't always the case.Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')

the advert said all is sound. the car has another 8 months MOT. My garage told me they find it very hard to believe the guy didnt know about it. For starters, the water pump had been sealed and was losing water anyway. we decided to take the money offered by the seller and have it repaired, taking the risk that garage might find other things wrong with it. but they didnt, so we'll keep the car for some time. It turned out to be an expensive buy that's for sure... (for the money we spent we'd have a car 2 years younger. live and learn)0
