Customs charge for laptop purchased for someone else.

So then it's not customs that are chasing us then? That was the main worry for me. Knowing my hubby he won't pay it so it looks like I may have too myself. How can I claim the money back from sisters b/f then as the order was placed in my husbands name, how can we prove that the laptop was for him and not us (apart from the fact that they have it with them in scotland, assuming they haven't sold it yet that is)
Are you saying that TNT have delivered the laptop to your sisters B/F and are now chasing you for the customs fee ? Most unusual if so."The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts."

Sure your hubby will pay the £45. Surely he will ask kindly for the money from the boyfriend. Surely the boyfriend will pay. Surely the sister will insist the boyfriend will pay. Surely there must be some sensible and rational people amongst them.0

I've seen it before - I think its a case that the paperwork takes longer to go through their systems than the laptop took to be delivered from customs to the OP. I think it varies from courier to courier.0 -
My mother sent my grandmother's coat over to me a few years ago. For some reason they wanted me to pay a customs charge. I had to call TNT (or whoever would have delivered) and explain that it was my grandmother's and it was older than I am. I think they gave me the number of someone to call who deals with this directly, and I wrote to them explaining this. About a week or so later, I got the coat, with no customs charge.
You should have just told them you were mailing it back for when you move back home... I'm sure there's a way around it.0 -

So you're giving out illegal advice - in this case the OP's extended family has purchased a laptop from overseas and as such, under UK law, they are obliged to pay customs duty on it.0 -

And aside from most likely being illigal, it would also be very difficult to argue the customs charge as it will have been sent with a customs declaration.0 -
this thread is prob. abandoned but my 2 cents is for the general case: . . . I have ordered lots of stuff delivered over borders (from US to canada, fr. us or canada to EU, etc), the shippers almost always pay any customs charge if0

I have ordered lots of stuff delivered over borders (from US to canada, fr. us or canada to EU, etc), the shippers almost always pay any customs charge if LESS THAN $100 and try to get it back from the addressee. If you have a good story for them, they will usually waive the charge to be nice to a new customer. Solodanceparty was almost not breaking forum rules, if she had used present tense for the suggestion to "lie" she would not have been suggesting anything illegal; at this point customs & excise have been paid and are totally out of the picture, any "lying" is now purely like lying when one is haggling over prices, it's down to what you can convince TNT to do as an act of goodwill. . marc0

What nonsense :rotfl:
Charges are calculated and paid on arrival in the destination country in most cases, for a shipper to have paid all the charges including the handling bit to the courier or RM they would have to be a mind reader.
So a seller who is not liable for anything is likely to just hand over some charges that is nothing at all to do with themHow about I ask that wholesale seller I recently bought from whether he could ship for free as I am really really nice and if I ask prettily maybe he will lose money on his deal for me. Yeah right, I work in a professional market not toytown. Oh yes, TNT or whatever courier was used is not a charity, they do not work for free much as we would like them to.
As for offering fraudulent advice, get your tenses right as this is what solodanceparty actually said:You should have just told them you were mailing it back for when you move back home...
