Car Insurance Help !!! Low miles

Hi there,

I need some advise on Car Insurance companies or who to go to. My dads car insurance has gone up 40% this year to £325 with Saga. He is a 65 year old does 1500 miles a year, has 9 years NCD and drives a m reg toyota carina.

I can't see why he is paying so much. I suspect its the area. Are there any companies that I should be trying? or companies that specialise in Low Mileage car insurance. Quick reply appreciated.

He is most likely doing too low a mileage.... if you plot mileage against premium you do not get a straight line but something more U shaped. If you are only driving 1,500 miles a year you are considered to not have enough experience. Likewise with his age his premiums will start to go back up again with most insurers as now getting to that stage in life where eyesight, hearing and general reaction times all start to go down.

One option may be to look at cherished car insurance. Its not really designed for this purpose - more for someone with an old convertable that they only take out for country drives in the summer etc - but as long as there isnt a requirement for him to have another vehicle it may well come in cheaper.

he could try a pay per use like Coverbox, but the billing might be a bit complicated for his liking.

At 1500 miles a year, is having the car cost effective? Could taxi's be an alternative?

Once drivers start to get into their mid and late 60's premims will rise. The above is also correct that very low mileage drivers are treated with caution due to precevied lack of experience.

Following the usual shop arround guide should help reduce his premium significantly over SAGA's renewal price.

If your mum has a licence try getting quotes with her on as it often reduces the premium
  • Try LV= (Liverpool Victoria) their cover is good & you will most likely find them to be cheaper than Saga.
