Lightbulb Moments how & when

There's been a few times in the past few years when I've suddenly got scared at how much I owe - there tends to be a flurry of activity as I change a few things (stop a DD here, change my mobile contract there), and then I slowly slide back into my old ways.
A few months ago I received a real shock when the bank charged me £225 in 2 months for going over my overdraft limit. It seems stupid now, but I'd always thought that my debt was totally manageable, and that bank charges were for other people - not me! I'm fine me!
I've been extremely lucky this time to find this website, at a time when I've been shocked by how much I owe. So it's all kinda come together to make my lightbulb moment. I don't think you can force it and I don't think mine could have come a moment earlier...it's taken all the things I've experienced to lead to this current determination to get debt free.
I don't think I'd even be having this light bulb moment if it wasn't for MSE & all the encouragement on the forums - you guys rock!0 -
my lightbulb moment came to full bulb slowly over the years
i was starting to try to pay things back
but i remember watching martin on this morning munching on cakes and strugling with the clingfilm <isa cakes>:money:

LookingAhead wrote:I found the DFW forum after reading on Martins email, the legendary Moozie's thread "Too Scared To Work Out What I Owe" and felt compelled to join up to the forum and offer her words of encouragement. It also made me even more determined to sort myself out.
I seem to remember it was Moozie's thread which inspired me to sit down and add everything up as well. I think I was on a dimmer switch before finding this place.Debt Free Nerd No. 89, LBM: April 2006, Debt at highest (Sept 05): £40,939.96

my lightbulb moment came on last month, when i came on this site and decided finally to read the forum. which prompted me to have a look at my total debt and it shocked me how far it had gone. it's funny, because it actually comes at a time when i'm making the highest salary i've had in a long time.
my second month on dfw-ness is proving quite a challenge. but i am really working hard to get back into the swing of things.
so i guess you could say half lightbulb then...MFW Newbie - #17. (#116 in 2019)

Hi DG,
My lightbulb moment was in the middle of the night! I woke up wondering how I could have possibly booked tickets for a Bon Jovi concert when I was 13grand in debt:wall: It kept me awake the rest of the night and I haven't swerved from my budget since:rotfl:
Hope hubby gets his 'moment' soon for your sake. I know I wouldn't have got this far without support from mine....and this wonderful site:TJanuary grocery challenge £150

My lightbulb moment was last month. We'd paid off a credit card by cancelling an endowment that was to see the children through university (if they wanted to go). Then I realised the new 0% credit card was up to £1500. 'We'll put next years holiday on it and pay if off before we go', yeah, right! We're keeping a spending diary. Trying to cut down on spending and working any hour we can. We're getting there.
Now for my Julie Andrews moment - huge thanks to everyone who contributes on here, you've made this all a lot easier!January budget
