Lightbulb Moments how & when

Options
Just wondered what it was that pushed you towards your lightbulb moment and your start to the road of debt free? With me I guess it was the fact that balances didn't seem to be reducing and the snowball effect meaning I couldn't keep up.

I'm worried that my oh hasn't had one and really am worried cos my estimate of his debt is really really high, one bill was over 10K that was just one, I've seen his letters that don't get opened and get tucked away. Wish he would hurry up and have his lightbulb moment so we can get on with life !

Mine was working out when to start my maternity leave! (In 11weeks and cant wait) was only 2 weeks ago but worked out that when my pay gets severely reduced I wouldnt be able to make my payments so decided to tell hubby and just blurted it out to him and now we have started to make some headway!!!

Think only your oh can have his lightbulb moment no matter how hard you want him to have it. Perhaps sit down and have a chat with him about it?
  • I've talked about how happy I am now that I'm on a DMP and also how easy it is really, I've asked about the mortgage and also talked about the fact that now I'm in control it would help him and that he doesn't have to try and pay for everything, but nothing seems to work.

If I approach him directly he will know I've been "spying" on him. I'm trying to get him to spend less and police what we spend jointly.

Maternity leave can be scary ! Hope all goes well for you. When is your due date?

Mine was when I ordered a bed with my credit card. I thought the bed was a bargain. It was £250 for a double four poster bed and matress with curtains. Then I realised I would end up paying double for it in the end if I kept paying the minimum payment.

    Debt-free and Proud!
I found this site first, not sure how I was looking for something completely different, and I started reading everyone's posts. Reading about compound interest, snowballing etc got me really intrigued and it occured to me that if I carried on the way I was going I would be in debt for the next 30 years. Bing! and there in lies the lightbulb.

Now, your OH, I really do feel your pain on that one as I'm waiting for the OH to have his lightbulb moment too. I'm slowly realising that you can't force it but if it doesn't come soon I'm going to make it very clear that I won't bail him out forever. It takes time and is extremely frustrating but everyone has to have their LBM for themselves and it can't be thrust upon someone.

    Good luck!

I was looking for my passport one day and during the search found a stack of unopened letters that I'd hidden away and 'forgotten'. That did it!

Thanks. Due on 19th September - couldnt come quick enough but at the moment busy spending money buying all the bits and bobs for the baby! Glad things are feeling better for you. I am so glad I told hubby about debt - feel so much more in control and have managed to have a good nights sleep since then!

Good ?!! Mine was sort of gradual brnging my head out of the sand - head all the way to Australia so it took a while!! The "final" moments were watching shopaholics (where has it gone?!!) and realising that my debt was masses more than most of theirs & the experts were saying "oh this is terrible"...oops!! Final nail was realising that I just couldnt consolodate AGAIN...needed to stop what was becoming an unmanageable spiral of debt. A friend gave me this site (thank you if you're looking in!!) Rang CCCS but decided to go it alone (& with you lot!)..best thing I ever did and I thank God that I did when I did - a few thousand more & I would have been indeep kaka!

    hey! I'm a september baby too ;)
Hope you will stick it out to become debt free. You need to have a chat with your OH, tell him how much you are worrying about the future. Fingers crossed for you both and good luck with the baby.

Mine was towards the end of last year when I realised that Christmas was going to be really sh*te AGAIN due to not having a lot of money to go out/buy my loved ones presents and only have a few packets of twiglets in the house to "celebrate" (although some people don't even have that).

I realised I had been in debt ALL my adult life and instead of whittling it down, it had crept up to the worse it had EVER been and I was still spending but having nothing really to show for it!? How did that work? Where was the money going..? (That's for a different thread!)

I just snapped and swore that 2006 would be the year I faced it and started to sort it out.

I did start working on it immediately and into 2006 and then in February just passed, I found the DFW forum after reading on Martins email, the legendary Moozie's thread "Too Scared To Work Out What I Owe" and felt compelled to join up to the forum and offer her words of encouragement. It also made me even more determined to sort myself out.

I still have a lot to do but I am pleased to say my state of mind has changed (although I sometimes have to battle relapses but don't we all?) and I now watch EVERY penny like a hawk. I've even been known to bank money now instead of just withdrawing it! This site has been an absolute Godsend, I miss it when I can't get to it and I recommend it to anyone. Love it!
