I'm looking to replace the family motor next spring . Is there a general rule of thumb for forecourt prices on diesel variants.
i.e for an identical model of car will the diesel model be "x%" more expensive,

General rule of thumb no.
The old "which is really cheaper, petrol or diesel car?" question is even harder to answer and depends on so many things. Diesel's often fetch more than they are really worth used and some diesels can have much higher servicing costs than the petrol equivalent. Other brands and services costs are much the same.
Need specific information about the cars, age your buying at, how many miles your going to do to get a reasonable estimate.
If you predominantly drive around town that makes it easy to say "petrol" as this is not the duty cycle modern diesels are good for.0
