Have to say, I've seen a lot of Acers with infections and other problems, but usually caused by the user's lack of knowledge of security suites and general housekeeping...but that's the same no matter what make you buy. Treat it right and it'll treat you right :)

Wait for the "for 200 more you could afford a mac".

Actually, for another £60 the OP could get a MacBook with a free 3 year warranty, by using their Apple student discount.

If the OP is thinking of selling it, an Apple would be a good choice as they tend to hold their value much better than other brands (just look at how much used Macs go for on eBay).

Don't let facts bother you though. ;)

I thought we'd decided a 15inch display was a little too small for design, 13s probably knacker the OP. I was thinking along the lines of a 15inch mac.

Dont let the OPs request bother you though.;)

Well like I said before, plug Mac or Lap into a large TV/Monitor, it might actually be cheaper and more convient, as I think you could work on a 15 inch screen for short times and the larger screen for home/dorm study.

  • Dell's refurb / outlet store is always good for the occasional bargain.

As much as I love my MacBook Pro, I think the 15" model that is a bare minimum (imho) for the sort of work being talked about is rather out of the OP's price range.

On ebuyer there is a decent spec MIS laptop if you don't like acers.

17.3" screen - and IMO resolution is more important than screen size when using graphics packages. This has a 1600x900 screen
    4gb ram
    pentium dual core
    ati 4330 graphics
    500gb hd

S'posed to be thinner and lighter, weighs 3kg.
Also has a built in subwoofer, for some reason.

    £478

I wouldn't do any sort of real design work on a laptop screen (though Macs, with their LED displays, are among the best). The OP would be better off investing in a small laptop for portability, and a larger external display for serious work.

You can certainly display (either in mirrored or in extended desktop mode) the output of a 15" Apple MacBook Pro on a domestic television.

Mine can display on our 52" LCD television, which should surely be large enough for anything you could want!

And, when docked on my desk, it displays on its own screen, on a 30" monitor and on a 24" DVI monitor (by means of a USB to DVI adaptor) simultaneously.

So, there's certainly no need to worry about the screen-size limitation of a 15" Apple laptop when it's placed on a desk or a table.

Don't laugh at banana republics. :rotfl:

As a result of how you voted in the last three General Elections,
you'd now be better off living in one.

Well no, we could worry about the OP hinting that their budget is £600 at most when a 15" MBP weighs in at around double that, and concentrate on solutions to their problem instead.

    Quiet right.
