Best craft book?

I have been salivating over all the Cath Kidston/craft type books online and am just looking for recommendations from you lovely ladies. Anyone able to recommend one?

Thanks xo

That really depends on the sort of thing you want to make. I love Cath Kidston but thought her book (which I got out of the library) was pretty meh. How proficient a sewer or knitter or crocheter or craftsperson are you? Do you want to make decorative items for the home, toys, wearables? There is so much available online that you don`t necessarily have to buy a book. Often what makes something is the wonderful fabric and or colours they use. I belong to an embroidery group and among us we must have every single craft book ever published, so I am more than happy to recommend something if you can give me a few more clues! But I also belong to ravelry (for knitting and crochet) and often go blog-hopping (have a look at Molly Chicken and then click on her favourite blogs for example, eg allsorts) and buy Cath Kidston-esque things (only cheaper) from Think Pink & Blue Too

I think Kath Kidson books are over rated, i bought Make It and its rubbish.
I do however have a couple by Tilda, Sew Pretty Homestyle & Crafting Christmas Gifts. They are beautiful books & i think they both cost less than £7 on amazon.
    Hope that helps lol

I've got Sew Pretty Homestyle too, and I love it, but it's more girly than Cath Kidston-y stuff. Having said that, some of the storage bags are great and I did end up buying the proper fabrics because I loved the look so much. If you want to see what it's like, google Tone Finnanger - that's Tilda's real name, and it'll show you the sort of things she does.
  • There is a lovely book called 'Sew Darned Cute' that has some lovely things in it. Cath Kidson? Overated - she doesn't actually sew herself! Have a look in some book shops and see what suits you.

Thanks for all the tips so far. I asked because I'd seen reviews of CK books saying that they were overrated and all style/no substance. So I wanted some inspiration for proper craft books which would still be ok for a beginner like me!

As for what I want to make: cushion covers, peg/laundry bags, maybe even handbags and curtains, pretty hooks and boxes etc. I fancy trying emboidery too. I am open to ideas!!

p.s. I can sew (just basic stitches, nothing fancy and not always in a straight line lol) and also knit (just plain stitch) and used to be able to crochet too, so I am more or less total novice standard!!! :rotfl:

I would definitely recommend the Sew Pretty Homestyle book - have a quick look here - it has laundry bags and these great stand-up boxes (a bit like tote bags but that stand by themselves) for storing bits and pieces as well as her cutesy hearts and dolls. I also have a good site (somewhere) where you can buy all the fabric and they take paypal (if that's of interest).
