Have you had norton antivirus on here at some point?

Kaspersky V7 is pretty old - has it got a current licence and updates, should be 2010 by now.

    Hi, Closed

I believe she did have norton on the laptop when she bought it. Is there still something left? We have had trouble in the past trying to remove all traces of Norton - seems to be rather difficult to get rid of totally.

She has got a current licence for Kaspersky (it has about 50 days left to run - it was a deal I got for 3 licences for 2 years, I believe) and the rule in the house is that updates are completed as soon as any of the computers/laptops are turned on and before accessing Explorer, Firefox or emails.

    Kind Regards

as closed says, use the norton removal tool to get shut of the dregs.

Java is well out-of-date, go to cotrol panel - java to update, and also acrobat reader is well out-of date.

Older versions of things often lead to vunerabilities that need plugging (and also anything using those apps should run better with up-to-date versions).

Rest of log doesn't look too bad, but tick to remove:-

    O23 - Service: SymWMI Service (SymWSC) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\Security Center\SymWSC.exe (file missing)

Once your kaspersky liscence runs out, I'd replace with avast (inc e-mail scanner) or avira (without). Both free and do a good job :)

    Many thanks, GunJack (and Closed)

Will do those jobs tomorrow - we'll get there eventually - just slow going around here.

Thanks so much for all your help - it is very appreciated.

(ps - mom says she had asked PC world to remove all traces of Norton!)

    Hi GunJack

This is the third time we have tried to download Acrobat reader but it has failed again. I think I need to leave that as the machine is so slow it may be causing the download to fail half way through.

So I have moved on to trying to update Kaspersky (free with Barclays) but Kaspersky won't even let me on to Kaspersky's website!

Is there anything I can do in the meantime to try and speed the laptop up, please.

  • You could dispense with acrobat and use foxit reader, much smaller and does all I need on pdf's.

    Thanks, Peter_the_Piper et al

Getting myself in a right old mess. Kaspersky wouldn't let me on Kaspersky's website to download the anti-virus software (would let me on support.kaspersky though). So I thought I would try and download Avast - managed to download from CNET and save to desktop. Removed Kaspersky - and restarted laptop. Then clicked to instal Avast - clicked next after language - and then it has a error and stops. Does this mean that there is a virus on the laptop given that I am having so many problems trying to load/download anti virus software?

Trying to restore the laptop to before I removed Kasperksy but it's not looking good.

Ahhhhhh - would be grateful for any guidance on this, please.

    Thanks Browntoa

I was focused on working my way through in order so still on sorting out the results of #3 post. I needed to update stuff after the guys saw the results of the Malware and HiJackthis posts.

    ie
    1 remove Norton - done
2 Update anti virus software - trying - have managed to load 2009 but not got a successful update yet - gets to 100% but doesn't finish
3 Java - did update but went back to old restore point so may need to do this again.
4 Acrobat out-of date - tried three times and decide to give up until other issues resolved.
5 Rest of log doesn't look too bad, but tick to remove:- O23 - Service: SymWMI Service (SymWSC) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\Security Center\SymWSC.exe (file missing) - not yet done - wanted to get 1-3 done and then run the software again
    6 run COMBOFIX

My big task now is to get anti virus back on so that I can safely go on the internet to carry out the rest of the instructions. I have managed to download a copy of the installation of Kaspersky on to a disk from another computer and got it to load on to my moms laptop - had to give up for tonight though as tried to update the databases and it got to 100% but didn't finish - not sure if it got its knickers in a twist trying to upload a report file to report back to Kaspersky that something had failed. Will try again tomorrow.

Am I doing it in the wrong order?
