Insureance write off

hi all. just been told today that my car is not economically repairable after someone drove into the back of it. it was a 51 plate mondeo estate ghia 79k miles 4 new tyres 12 months mot.ive had a look on parkers and the dealer value is £2490. ive had a look on ebay and autotrader and the cars similar to that are not even close to the price. i havent yet had an offer but i want to be prepared to get them to push the price up. its also hard for me to find cars to compare the prices to because i live in north wales and most cars are over 100 miles away. also my car is at the garage now should i take my car from there before they take it to a compound? because ive herd about when they take the car before you accept the offer there is no chance of getting the car back. if im still not happy with the price they offered me whats best for me to do? contact the solicitiors thats been appointed to me? thanx

I'd take the car back if it is driveable, and then negotiate a deal. You might be able to get a back lane repair shop to give you a more reasonable repair quote. I have seen prices 1/3rd of the original repair quote.
  • they will give you their book price, but you can ask to buy the car back with the money they offer you and get it repaired yourself, although it will say on the log book etc it has been a right off in the past, not too sure of the finite details and am sure people on here will put me right but that is the long and short of it. Its rubbish, especially as someone drove into YOU!! Hope you get a sensible offer.

To be fair, More Than offered my son a realistic price, based on a car advertised in Autotrader, 27 miles away from us, that was identical to his, They initially knocked a couple of hundred off due to the mileage difference but split that after a bit of haggling. I was pleasantly surprised as I was expecting a poor offer, so maybe wait and see what you get offered.

if you have intensions of repairing the car get the car back if driveable, assesore will look at the whole condition of the car not just accident damaged area and asses how much it would cost to repair the whole car thus many over priced quotes to repair the car. take the car to a local reputable body shop and get a quote for just the damaged area, inform the insurance conpany of the quote and see weather they agree to pay to have it repaired with them if not you have the option of buy back, you can hagle the price a bit they will offer bottom book price you mondeo sounds to be good reasonably low mileage, full survice history? all these point you could argue that the car is in good condition and is worth something. remember if you have it repaired privatly then you have to have a VC test done in order for you to retax the car next time al a vic test does validate its identity it does not asses fitness of the repair e.t.c, check with your insurance to see weather youll have to provide them with a new mot to carry on with the policy its not legally required to have a new mot done the old one is still valid untill expirery but some insurers require it to be done in order fo them to know that it has passed after it haveing a bump and repaired and some require an engineers report too of the car. VIC tests have long waiting lists some maxing 8 weeks, but if the car is drivable i.e the hatch opens and closes ok and rear door not jammed shut and suspension, flat balled tyres, no smashed windows etc is fine you can drive the car till repaired and can still continued to drive even though you havent had vic tested but must have it tested before you can tax it again!

am sure i can be corrected in some points if i'm wrong and ill apologise in advance if i give you false information i have tried to be as informative as i can.
  • The mondeo is worth £1500 (to an insurance company) tops so you are not really in a strong position, Ebay completed listings are the best place to see what its worth, after all, a car is only worth what someone will pay for it and not what it says in a book! Good luck tho
