Hi,
Is there any software I can use, preferably free, that will allow me to restrict the amount of time a user spends on the internet? I want to say allow the users (aka kids), x amount of hours per week\day to use the internet.

Thanks

If you use a router, it may have this feature built into it already. My Netgear DG834 allows this function.

Another bad parent I can see.

One easy way, do as I do, I sit with my children and say times up when time is up.

You change your log-on password and don't let them know it.

Or, you remove the modem from the computer and lock it where they cannot get to it.

    Software can easily be bypassed.

Not really, about time parents acted like adults and took care of their children and stopped being namby pamby.

Children are a lot smarter than we give them credit for, they will bypass the software.

I agree with the sentiment, but think that particular statement is a bit OTT, the OP is just asking for advice, and shouldn't expect to be called a bad parent as a result.

Not everyone has time to sit down and watch everything the kids do all day long, it doesn't make them a bad parent.

You make time with your children.

They goto school, they should be looked after.

They come home mother or father should be there to spend time with them.

    It's not over-the-top.

They were asking advice on doing something they can do themselves and I gave them some answers.

A good parent will be there to supervise their off-spring and make sure they are safe n sound.

We will have to disagree, all I said was that calling someone you don't know a bad parent, is a bit harsh in my opinion. They came here for some technical help, not comments on how much they love or care for their kids.

I agree albatross a lot of paople come here for ANSWERS on certain matters,
not to be lectured at and told they should do it another way, If people haven't got a constructive answer then they shouldn't bother answering

anyway it would be good to now if there are other free programs out there that do the job,
My router doesn't have the time limitation, Net Nanny is capable but you do have to pay for it

I have a 14 year old with his own PC, normally very good but have caught him on a few occasions on the net when he should have been off

If the OP searches this chat forum for "Parental Controls", then this type of question has been answered before.
