Financial Housekeeping

Was just wondering how long you fellow DFW's keep all your financial paperwork?

Not only bank statements, and bills, but things like P45's or whatever it is you get at the end of each financial year?

Every so often I just tend to shred all credit card statements and stuff so I only have the last 12 months or so.

But how long should I keep all the tax type forms?

I tend to keep all my P60s, P45s etc and tax related stuff. I think I've read somewhere that you should keep all that stuff for at least five years anyway. I know work have to keep stuff that long for tax purposes so the same probably applies in a non work context.

I believe for Tax purposes you should keep things for 6 years.

As that is how far the Tax man can go back.

So I would day 6 years worth of bank statements, cheque book stubs, bills and credit card statements etc.

I have six years worth of statements and tax bits too. It comes in handy sometimes - I got a query from the tax man about my salary some five years previous, and it was only my still having my P60 that kept me from a whoppy great tax bill!

I used to save everything - cleared out my files last month and found phone bills from 1999 :o am not quite as anal rentetive these days, so have shredded all but the last financial year on household bills.
