Would it be ok to use Ocado carrier bags for putting the waste food in as they claim to be biodegradable?
Plastics that claim to be biodegradable are a dubious one. Some can be composted like plant matter or paper, but some of them are just modified oil based plastics, and not all of these break down very fast, very well, or even in to useful biological materials. Some just break down in to tiny bits of plastic that you can't see, but are still there. Solves the unsightly litter problem, but long term environmental impact of little plastic bits getting in to soil and water is uncertain. Treating them as biodegradable materials, like we would paper or plant matter is I suspect a mistake.
I'm trying to avoid most biodegradable plastics for now, with the exception of those that can be home composted, because most can't be recycled and the long term environmental effects are not clear.0 -
our council won'r let us use biodegradable bags in our kitchen caddy's which s fine by me as it doesn't cost extra. We can put cardboard and paper in our brown bins so i keep the cereal boxes, tear some off to fit the bottom of the kitchen caddy and line it with that. Its no effort to wash out and i have to say our big brown wheelie bin that takes food waste and cardboard is full every two weeks and a lot less rubbish is going out.
From another point of view we live near woods and our bin men come at 6am so we have to put the bags out the night before. The neighbours that don't bother to put their food waste in the brown bin are obvious the next day when half of their rubbish is over their drives after the foxes have ripped open the bin bags. Because we don't put any food waste in our the foxes never rip our open!Trying to save money and always open to ideas and expecting our first child in March 2015.0 -
I've got one of these outside my back-door and tbh they do get quite stinky. I use Tesco compostable bags in mine - they're much cheaper than the official ones.0

My council supplys the bags for the food caddy for free, didnt quite realise how lucky i was! I am always shocked about how fast it fills up & gets taken out to the large green bin outside. This will be my first summer in the house (fingers crossed we get 1!) so hoping I dont get a smelly, maggot infested bin outside, it is collected weekly & hopefully a wash out with the hose should keep it ok!0

Nah they wont get maggot infested unless you leave the lid on.0

I remember the "pig van" that used to collect all food scraps for the local piggery. It was voluntary but most people had a "pig pail" with a lid and all food was disposed of by scraping it into the pail.
One of the walks we used to go on as children involved a detour to the pig farm to see the pigs. We didn't mind the smell but I don't think I'd like it now. We recycled organically but didn't have a fancy name for it." The greatest wealth is to live content with little."

I thought I'd be the only one who would remember that :rotfl:
The significant difference between the pig pail and a food caddy was that pig pails were kept outside and well away from the house. My granny would have had heart failure if someone had suggested she keep waste food indoors .....................I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)
