Kitchen caddy ...convince family ?

Options
We today had kitchen caddy delivered by local council for food waste. Now we have a few problems.

Family think it is disgusting to have food waste sitting in it until it goes to big bin...............tried to explain no diffferent to sitting in kitchen bin . It has lid and will be emptied each night.

I am shocked at the price of the compostable bags for it . We have been told we can wrap food waste in newspapers before putting in compost/food bin BUT we read newspapers online lol

I will add I am all for recycling etc, put stuff on freecycle, have reusable bags for shopping, use recycle bin for cans paper etc but all these different bags are costing me a fortune, I use recycled wheelie bin liners for normal bin and now have to buy these compostible one.

Wish me luck ...............

Have to say, if my council ever gives me a kitchen caddy the Mayor will be wearing it on his head.

Do you use shop bought sliced bread ? Ideal bag for putting into the caddy. Luckily I have an internal garage and the caddy sits in there until I take it out to the compost bin.
  • Were getting some soon - hopefully I will be able to plant spuds or something in them. I like the idea of something from the council actually saving money. Doesn't happen often round here.

The idea of throwing several hundred pounds of food away to produce the most expensive compost or electricity is absurd. There would be absolute fury if electricity went up by a similar price. Ah well it did actually.

I suggest marking the bin every few inches with the price of the food thrown away over a year. eg £40 or £50 for every two or three inches.

Nope - as is the case with many Mayors - it's fat one and I wouldn't have any difficulty jamming the caddy on it :D

as you say it is no worse (and perhaps better if emptied more often) than having food waste in your kitchen bin mixed in with dry waste. it would seem disgusting to me now to scrape the plates into the kitchen bin!

in our house food waste goes into a small flip top bin (maybe 5 litre capacity) which lives in the cupboard under the kitchen sink. when full, contents get wrapped in newspaper and chucked into wheelie bin for compostable waste, and bin gets washed out. OK not the nicest job but after a few years of nappies you dont mind these things so much!

Yes but a lot of food waste is not edible - you dont eat used teabags, bones, egg shells, fruit and veg peelings (well I dont). And if people are going to throw away edible food, its better to be composted than landfilled where it will produce methane which is a worse greenhouse gas than co2.

Do you have a freebie paper delivered? I don't buy newspapers, but I do get one through the door which is enough for us. I only use two sheets each time.
You don't have to use anything, but when I run out of paper, I have used a couple of sheets of kitchen roll.
Also, if you buy organic veg form sainsburys, the bags are biodegradable, the potato ones are about the right size.
