Are you that its not due to overscan and the desktop icons are infact on the other screen, but just not visible due to the tv display being less than the monitor display. If that makes sense?

Most people use powerstrip http://www.entechtaiwan.com/util/ps.shtm for custom resolutions according to posts I've read on the https://www.avforums.com forums.
microsoft has this to say: Desktop Icons May Not Appear on a Secondary Monitor http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q232798&
HTHIt could have been worse. At least source code's not combustible, or you can bet somebody at McAfee would have lit it.0 -
When I set the boys machine up with two monitors, I could set it three ways.
One whole screen over both comptuers (like yours seems to be). Two screens showing the same (cloned), or one screen on top of the other.
I can change these through the graphics card settings.
Try right clicking a blank area of your desktop screen, then click properties. then settings. You may be able to make changes here, or click advanced, then select your graphics card. How many surrealists does it take to change a lightbulb?
