Can you opt out of having to use a card reader for online banking?

I don't want to bother using a card reader any more for online banking. I just find it annoying. I don't do my banking in just one place. I never even remember I need to use it. Sometimes I will be at work and need to make a payment yet I can't because I obviously haven't got the card reader on me.
I loathe the card readers as much as you... but one very easy solution is to call up Nationwide, say that you've lost your reader, and they will send you a new (second) one.
Keep one in a drawer at home, and one in a drawer at work. Simple.

Just to make a payment to an account in my name which was already set up on the system, I was supposed to use the Nationwide card reader process. My eyesight has deteriorated and I could not read the display and therefore could not make the payment. Nationwide flatly refused to allow internet banking without the use of a card reader - though they did offer to supply one for people who had difficulty with the regular size.0

Yeah they are well annoying - All they do is stop people who have stolen your logon details, from setting up and transferring money out of your account. What's the use in that?
I'd much rather prefer the inconvenience and worry of having to try and get the money back after it has gone. All that speaking to the fraud department and hoping that they will put the money back in your account before the rent payment goes out - that's how I get my adrenaline fix.

I've got a few card readers as I've got accounts at diffenrent banks and building societies, the idea of keeping one at work is a good idea but I can see it being a nuisance having to take one with you when you're travelling. I know Nationwide do telephone banking where you can transfer money and although I'm registered I've never used it as I like the interenet.
Barclays I find to be a real pain as you have to use the card reader to log in and look at your details at least with Nationwide you can view your accounts without the reader. I recently had a problem becuase my card had expired and they hadn't sent me a replacement from Barclays so I couldn't even view my accounts until I got the replacement. That took 3 weeks branch visits and lots of phone calls to sort.0
