Gas meter moving - anyway around this price?

Can you not just build a cupboard around the gas meter installation above the doorway? As long as you have a door on it to provide access to the emergency control valve for reading the meter.
You are correct about the competitive quote system, the larger contractor are not interested in the domestic work. All the gas transporters allow customers to access competitive quotes its because they did have a monopoly. Sadly, for the consumer, they still do!
They quote seems excessive, however, National Grid do own the pipe and they can charge pretty much anything they want if you want it moved.
Also, National Grid do not own you're gas meter. They simply own the pipes used to transport the gas to your flat and run the emergency service in your area. A company called National Grid Metering MAY be the Meter Asset Manager for your gas meter, but it could also be any number of other companies.
I reckon this is just one you are going to have to cough up for if you really want the service pipe moved.0 -

The meter isn't the problem - it's that the incoming gas pipe comes up through the floor ... to the ceiling, in the middle of the doorway. The previous door opening was 2 foot, we opened it to a 'normal' opening and found the gas pipe ! which is now happily bang in the middle !

I know !

Agreed, I got carried away with the Nat Grid own .......... But they are the only people who can move ithe meter (so we can sort out the pipework) or alternatively, forget the meter, they are the only people who can sort out the pipework if meter stays where it is.

I know - but it galls me, I mean £1200 !! I don't mind paying for something if you get something .... but this is seriously only a couple of hours work, if that. I know the phrase ''rip-off'' gets bandied about, but this is a rip-off. Where else are you only allowed to buy a service from one company who can then charge whatever they want ?
I'm seriously thinking about leaving the pipe where it is.
Thanks everyone for the input.0
