Housing help for a homeless single man over 25. Housing advice say they cnnot help??!

Ok, the situation is this.
The relayionship between my partner and I is over. We have a 14month old son together and rent a house. I was made redundant when I returned to my job from maternity leave and my partner (well, ex. Can't get used to that yet.) is a student. He is due to finish his degree in June.
He wishes to stay in the area but needs to move out. Unfortunately he is on JSA and has no savings, he is also bankrupt. He contacted the housing advice centre to see what his options were, but apparently they have no duty of care towards him. Effectively they don't give a s**t if he was on the streets!
I am HORRIFIED that they have refused him any help. We both don't have the money for a deposit for a private rent and even of we did, he'd need a guarantor as he is bankrupt. If he got full time work we would still not be able to afford to save for his deposit as everything would go on rent.
So what on EARTH do we do? We can't possibly look at moving on as it seems we are stuck in a stalemate. I would be the guardian of our son, so it's not practical for me to move as this is a 2 bedroomed house and everything in it is mine.
Does anyone have any advice as to where to go from here?

Many local council's operate rent or deposit guarantee schemes for tenants on low income/benefits and some have schemes where they place homeless tenants with LHA friendly private landlords.
Have a look at the Shelter website which gives comprehensive information how to complete a homelessness application with the local council that has a statutory obligation to assist those who do not have accommodation in the next 28 days, including how to appeal the outcome.
Have a look at the crisis website, too, for advice.
He should speak to his University accommodation office and student union/advice centre, too, to see if he can get hardship money or accommodation via their services.
Is it a part-time degree? I don't understand how he is claiming JSA while studying?0 -
Is your ex a full time student? is he at uni? can he ask the uni housing advisor about his situation?
He needs to go to CAB and get independant advise on what should be available. But as there is a huge shortage of housing he is unlikely to be offered more than a hostel.0 -
He doesn't do more than 16hrs a week study, hence the JSA Jowo. Also the college he studies at doesn't have any halls of residence. I know the housing situation isn't good and there's a huge shortage, but he really has nowhere to go.Watch out people. You don't know what lurks around the corner for you!0

Shelter is a good bet - they may have a local drop in centre, their website gives a phone number. The council are obligated by law to assist those with no housing in the next 28 days which may consist of advice, temporary housing (B&B, hostel, private landlord) or social housing depending on priority and availability.0

As in my last post, he has nowhere to go. He has a couple of friends from uni but they live with their folks. There are very few jobs that give digs these days, not even hotels here do this any more.
We desperately want him to stay in the area so his son gets to see his Dad, he does have family a couple of hundred miles away but this would be an absolute last resort for the obvious reasons.Watch out people. You don't know what lurks around the corner for you!0 -
Your sofa is looking like a good bet.
He should register with the council and see the MP.
The lack of social housing in this country is appalling.0 -
He isn't homeless yet which is part of the problem.
Even if he was he would be expected to sort himself out.
And yes that is how it is for single people without any dependants in this country. I don't understand why people are horrified when it's been the case for years.I'm not cynical I'm realistic
(If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)0 -
but theres los of bedsit or room share places that dont do credit checks and so wont need a guarantor, or a deposit, my OH kids moved into a house share, they gave £50 for a deposit, there was no credit check and he takes HB, this is in London, i presume there will be places like this if you look in the small ad section of the local paper, dont go through a LA or you will need depoits and credit checks etc0
