Have prepayment meters with Eon, can I change to cheaper supplier? Who is cheapest?

Hi :j

I moved into rented house on my own with my son on 13th and have two prepayment meters with Eon, a gas card one and an electric key one. Googling Eon prepayment meters there is a lot of bad press about them and they seem to have a reputation for charges being high. Have other MSErs found this to be the case??

Has anyone found a better supplier for prepay meters? Is it easy enough to change them and who is best/ cheapest?

Am on income support at the moment so money is tight and don't want to be unnecessarily spending if I don't have to!

It is only a bargain if you need it!

EDF is the cheapest as far as I know. It usually takes about 28 days to transfer over and is really easy. You sign the form and they do the rest. With EDF you get Nectar Points too.

If you need anymore help try looking on the comparison websites they are usually pretty good. Although most can't give an exact price for prepayment meters, you can still get an idea of who is the cheapest quickly.

    Hi Kay.Samuels

It is very easy to change suppliers. Pop your details on to one of the comparison charts and go for the deal which best suits your circumstances.

Our prepayment prices are very similar to standard credit prices. However, you will not be eligible for any discounts with this type of meter.

Also, the electricity has a daily standing charge which is payable whether or not you use electricity. This does not apply to your gas meter.

Have you contacted us to let us know you have moved into the property?

If not, you will most probably be using the previous tenants card/key. These will need changing as soon as possible as there may be a debt set on the meters which will need removing as it will not be yours.

Give us a call and this can be sorted very quickly.

Hope this is useful but give me a shout if you need any more info. Will be happy to help. :)

Why not? Any examples please to back up this comment?

The cheapest supplier for you will vary from region to region, EDF will almost definately not be the cheapest supplier if the OP is in an EDF region.

Best advice is to go for a comparison at any of the sites in the bar above, put in your usage if you can and find the cheapest supplier, you may well find Ebico may be the cheapest supplier on prepayment but again that does depend on usage.

I can't find a single comparison site that does not handle prepayment tariffs  .

Edit: oops, sorry, hadn't noticed Premier's post.

British gas's click PAYG tariff is generally one of the cheapest on pre-payment though EDF and ebico are also cheap. Your best bet is to pop your details into a site like uswitch though and that should tell you.

If you want shot of the prepayment meters, the current supplier may be willing to swap them. Failing that switch to EDF and they will remove them once you have been with them on prepayment for a month (they are coming to remove ours next week)
  • ebico should be lowest for gas elec will depend on location
  • Thanks some interesting replies. I didn't know that electricity would vary depending on area for example! I will look on somecomparison sites now as I have a bit of time (quite a luxury at the moment!) and see what I can find out.

    :cheesy:

As I rent the homeowner has said via my estate agent that they are happy for me to go on to normal meters in the future, just not straight away. As they have both been really helpful in getting me in the property (paid no bond to owner and no admin fee to estate agent) I am happy to wait a while so homeowner is confident I am a responsible long term tenant. So for the shortterm I am stuck with prepayment ones!

  • So it's coming up with Ebico as the top cheapest for me, anyone on here with them?

Is it easy to switch over will there be any hassle involved in terms of my meters/keys/cards??
