Hi,
Just to update you on my sons great news...
quick recap, son is 10 yearl old has idiopathic generalised epilepsy and an intracranial dermoid cyst ( cyst between back of eye and brain),
first put claim in july, refused it, i asked for a reconsideration, they refused it based on my son not being admitted to hospital since may, and also consultants numerous clerical errors wrong dates e.t.c. I took advice from the helpfull people on here and got help from welfare rights officer, i filled in gl24 and sent it off on 17/11, I received a letter from dla yesterday saying they logged appeal request as of 18/11 and will look at it again if i dont here anything within 11 weeks then i can ring them. Anyway I decided I would give them a quick ring today to say that i didnt think that they looked at it again but would go to appeal, result being lady said she would check the deadline date on sons claim and let me know, she came back on the phone and said it was being looked at now how strange, she said i would here in 7 - 10 days. the decision maker rang me 10 mins later to check a few things that was ok. then half hour later the first lady rang back and said award been given LRM & HRC backdated to july........
so the fight is worth while, thanks to everyone that helped

  • GREAT news
  • That's great news, charm1!

I applied on 3rd July and heard today I've been awarded HRM indefinitely. So all those out there with claims, don't give up!
  • Well done am really please you managed to get it. I tried to claim and was turned down, I appealed and was turned down again. I am partially deaf in both ears and wear hearing aids, can't hear things like phone ringing, smoke alarm, carbon monoxide alarm, have to have subtitles on when watching TV, have trouble hearing people on the phone and face to face etc, would love to be able to buy aids to help me i.e vibrating alarm clocks etc as my partner works away all week so am home alone. What would be the next step, any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks - Kate.

Vibrating alarm clocks aren't that expensive - mine cost me around £10-15.

  • That is fantastic news! I know how you feel - just had my DLA accepted after 6 months of asking for reconsideration and appealing. So pleased for you!
  • Good to here you have been awarded... my dd also has a massive intercranial cyst, has a va shunt fitted & has had 13 ops in the last 14 months all shunt related..... her dla claim was due for renewal in oct, so forms sent back in july, but we are still waiting to here in the meantime the dla & carers has stopped due to running out in oct, dla has been waiting for the hospital to send appropriate forms back to them, but Ive now been told that they now have the forms & its now with the decision maker, & should here within two weeks....

Contact your local Social Services. They will have a team known as the Sensory Impairment Unit (or something similar, depending on which county council is concerned). They have wonderful people there who seem to have access to whatever funds are required to purchase and then loan to you whatever equipment you need. This can include type-talk phones, ringers, flashers, alarms, even all-in-one kit where you keep the central unit on your person (about the size of packet of 20 cigarettes) and the display unit will indicate whether it's the doorbell, the phone, the smoke alarm, even the baby monitor ! Best of all, they will even install it all for you !! :T
