How about using the gmail notifier which sits next to the clock? Double clicking on it brings up your inbox. You can set it up so that it logs in whenever you boot your PC up? It's useful because it shows when you have new mail in your inbox.

There are more elegant ways, but if you copy the url in the address bar of your browser when showing GMail to the clipboard, (highlight it and Ctrl + c will work), then right click on your desktop, and create a new shortcut. In the location, paste (Ctrl +v) the url in. Next, name it something like Gmail and finish.
If you want it in your task bar, make sure it is unlocked, and drag your new shortcut down onto it.
Should work OK.

Hi,
I meant to copy the url into the first box that pops up when you want to create a new shortcut - it specifically asks for an address/location.
You didn't mean the name box, or you weren't trying to create a folder were you?
Works for me.
