Do I need a BT line?

I was with BT years ago, but left them. The old phone line is still here, but obviously disconnected. I am with Virgin but am not happy with their service and want to move. However, many providers say I need a BT line. Does anyone know if I can just call BT and re-activate the old line? If so, will I have to pay? I have very limited hearing and only have the phone for emergency calls really (and for my son to use) so calling up to ask about this is a non-runner. Any help would be much appreciated.

So are you on Virgin Media (cable service)?
For any other ISP you need an ADSL line (though that does't mean you have to pay your line rental to BT).
Reconnection can cost £122.50, but look at the top of this board for info on the current BT free connection offer. Once you are reconnected you can then apply for your broadband with whichever ISP you wish.

  • Yes, I am with Virgin Media  Thanks for your advice. I assume from this that if I ask BT to reactivate the line, they will then charge me rental?

The free connection requires 12m line rental, for details see the link to the offer.

I think it is still an 18 months contract to get the connection waived.

Is it just your telephone you want to transfer, or are you also looking at getting Sky TV?

I got a good offer from Sky a few weeks ago where they offered to do my BT Line free of charge. I'd still have a £69 setup fee for their services (TV, Broadband and Telephone), and I was looking to get their top package at £80ish per month (still am, especially now Virgin Media have agreed not to penalise me for leaving before my contract expires), but you might be able to get some sort of offer.

Apologies, yes, it is 18m not 12m.
