No dial tone on BT line

Hi
I currently am not getting any dial tone on the landline, and the Broadband connection is not working. It hasn`t worked now for a week.I have done all the standard tests:
-I`ve removed all the extra connections on the main socket, and tried a different phone directly into the wall socket. This still didn`t work.

I`m concerned that if I get BT to get it fixed, it could be a fault of equipment not directly under BT`s remit. When I called them they have mentioned a possible fee of £125 if it`s not their equipment at fault just for the call out.
This is a very high fee- would I be better off changing to another provider for the line rental, as this would put in a whole new line, or even getting an electrician out to take a look at it?
Thanks

Have you tried connecting the phone to the test socket inside the main socket?

  • I had read this on the BT webpage. I unscrewed the main socket, but there was only wires- there wasn`t a test socket. Do you maybe know why?

Are you sure it was the main socket? As far as I can remember (used to work at BT on the faults line a good few years ago) there is always a test socket on the main entry point.

If you try in this test socket and it still does not work, the fault points to the BT network, as BT are responsible for the line up to that point. Therefore, it would be there responsibility to fix, without any charge to you.
  • Ok thanks for your advice- I`ll take a look at it this evening!

    Hi neilgarv,

Sorry to hear your line and broadband are not working. Can you drop me an email to btcare at bt.com and I will run some tests to check if there are any faults on the line. Could you also include your MSE username on the email.

    Cheers

    Shane.

Only on the new NTE5's,older instalations used a one piece master socket.
    See pic-

The yellow capacitor at the bottom makes it a master socket, slave extensions do not have this. One of the reasons the NTE5 was introduced was to make it harder for DIY'ers to !!!!!! things up when fitting their own extensions.

If you used to work on the BT faults line you should know that only the later NTE5 master sockets have a removable faceplate which has a test socket, older properties and lines that have been there for many years without any problems and consequently have have never been updated can still have the old LJ 2/1A master socket which does not have a removable faceplate.

Edit :- As shown by spike7451 in the post above.

Hi there, it could be that you have a newer type of socket. Look at this page and let me know which type of socket that you have: http://www.productsandservices.bt.com/consumerProducts/displayTopic.do?topicId=25075&s_cid=btb_FURL_accelerator. For instruction on how to connect to the test socket (if you have one) follow step 4 here: http://bt.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/bt.cfg/php/enduser/cci/bt_adp.php?p_sid=EbbHXYDj&cat_lvl1=346&cat_lvl2=401&cat_lvl3=407&cat_lvl4=753&p_cv=4.753&p_cats=346,401,407,753&p_faqid=9611. I can check for faults on your line also if you like? Send your BT account info to btcare@bt.com, mark FAO Claire in the subject field and include your MSE username, neilgarv, and I'll check things for you. The £125 call out charge would only be raised of the fault was found to be with your internal wiring/equipment. The links above will eliminate this as the cause of the problem. Thanks in advance, Claire

  • Thanks for everyones help on this. Spike 7451, as per the picture this is the socket I have(one of the older ones), so there is no test socket on it. Shane, I`ll e-mail you through the details so I can get a test on the line.

Why don't you just report a line fault? BT will then run the remote tests to see if there's a visible problem. They only charge if they come out and the fault is downstream of the master socket. If you are testing from the first incoming socket and there is no NTE5, it must be a problem on their side of the netrwork
I assume you have tried another handset?
Changing your provider won't help, as the fault will still be there!
