I'm intrigued, and slightly reassured, of the possibility of it being a random attack by guessing the numbers although I would never have imagined that was possible, so hopefully my fears of my PC having been compromised and someone obtaining all my financial data are misplaced, although I will still keep checking my other accounts as these transactions only occured in the last couple of days so may not even show on a statement yet if any other card has been used too.

Cards will always be fairly easy to compromise but that is why the credit acts protect the consumer against fraud.

The CV (or CSC in the USA) isnt wildy used yet and dont know how "international" it is yet.

Always worth being careful but if you have any form of card you have a risk of it being compromised.

There is one bank with an interesting idea, you get an "online" credit card number which is only valid for a couple of weeks. Log into your online banking and there is basically a "generate" button to get your next number. People who do steal numbers from snooping online websites, key logging etc will typically not use the card immediately so that it becomes increasingly difficult to work out where the card number was got from and therefore potentially who has done it. With this system if they wait to use it the card number will expire before they use it.

It would be safer if the pin number we use in retailers was different to the one used at the cash machine. That's the major fear when speaking to most people.

Call it paranoia but I use cash now more than I ever have done in the last 10 years, and do more of my card transactions over the counter in the bank.

I use my cards all the time and almost never cash - the chances of me losing my wallet or having it stolen is in my mind higher than card fraud and even if i am subject to card fraud then I am not liable for any of the monies lost.

Unfortunately card issuers put the onus on the cardhodler to prove they weren't negligent with their PIN, rather than the other way around. The CCA isn't much good when this happens.
