How far must wooden surround be from a woodburner?

Hiya, Have been reading through Regulation J concerning the new multifuel stove I am putting in to an old fireplace. It is not clear how far an exposed wooden mantlepiece needs to be from the metal side of the stove (which will project a little way out of the recess). I think it is 200mm (as per para 2.18 (a), page 27 of Building Reg 2000 (section J) but then am confused by part (b) and diag. 21 which implies it could be "Less than 200mm" or even 40mm

Any clues? thanks in advance.
