Are plaster mantlepieces fireproof?

Hi - am putting a multifuel stove into an old fireplace. If I put a plaster mantlepiece around it - can this be considered (for safety reasons) as fireproof?
My options are wood, plaster, metal or stone - I want to appreciate the pros and cons of each.

Cheers, thanks in advance.

NB - I know about J Regs etc.

UPDATE - reading through Regulation J, exactly how far must a mantlepiece (combustable) or "decorative surround" be from a multifuel stove - not clear. Is it 200mm as per Diag 21?

I also see Para 31 (b) That plaster is certified as non combustable.

plaster is non combustable, but it may well crack if too close to a high heat source.
    concrete and tile maybe better?
stone is the best option but can be expensive of course.
    Get some gorm.
