Hubby was trying to put our plasma tv on our fireplace wall, he wanted to put the cables down the back of the fireplace as it is no longer in use as part of it had collapsed. After pulling out some old bricks there was some kind of boiler made of what looks like copper, its about a foot long by 5 inches wide, rectangular shape and hade pipes going in one side, he managed to remove it but we were wondering if it is made of copper would it be worth any money as its quite heavy
Thanks

Good evening: try putting a fridge magnet on it...if the magnet stays it is cast iron and worth diddly squat.....it is most likely the remains of a solid fuel back boiler.

  • It sounds like a copper back boiler - fitted in the old days to heat the hot water when the fire was on - sadly i'm old enough to have fitted a few in council houses when i was a bit younger. They used to be worth a bit from the scrappies back then - not sure now but must be worth something

  • Thanks for the replies, we sort of thought that it was some sort of back boiler, we just weren't sure what to do with it. Will try the magnet tomorrow as we put it ouside as it was filthy and it is bucketing down here.

if its heavy, then its most likely to be cast iron.
a copper tank/vessel is fairly light.
    Get some gorm.
  • Hi guys, since it was dry I managed to get outside to it, put the magnet on as suggested and it didn't stick, have had a better look at it and think that the weight may be coming from the pipe that runs into it

You will get a few quid for it from a scrap dealer, how much will depend on there current price per kilo for copper.
