replacing kitchen ceiling

Options
I'm about to takedown my kitchen ceiling but don't actually know how to put up a new one. I've done a search on the internet but couldn't find anything of much use so has anyone any experiance of putting up a new ceiling and whats involved? I'm going to need to get a plasterer in to do the walls, would skimming a ceiling be something a plasterer would do?

Any help welcome.
Nothing to see here, move along.

Do you NEED to take down the old one (VERRRRY messy!!)

Can't you just screw new plasterboard over it?

& if you're getting the walls plastered, why not let the plasterer put the new ceiling up, too? It'd only be a short job for them & not cost much, while they're on site.

You'd need arms like an octupus & make sure it's not got too many joints, close together & that it's in staggered sheets, so less likely to crack.

    Let them do it!!

    As Vanboys says.
Is it that bad it needs taking down?
    Is it lath and plaster?
If so and it's not really bulging it would just be as good a job to overboard it and with half the mess.
I locate the cieling joists then use 3 inch galvanized clout nails "large headed" and on the overhang where the board doesnt fall on the joist srew the boards up to the laths.
As said you should stagger the boards.
    Scrim joints and skim.
If it is allready plasterboarded I would take it down and start from scratch.
You would be best getting plasterer in to skim the cieling.

I developed a tool for putting up 8 x 4 sheets single handidly. It is a piece of 2 x 2 cut to aroung 4 ft 4 inches long. It is overlapped by a couple of other pieces of 2x2 at the ends.

I screw this up to the joists temporarily to hook one end of the plaster board in place then support the other with a wooden T pulled up into place with rope.

Then, I work from the area of the board in contact with the joists and use a drill driver to screw the board to the joists.
