Alliance And Leicester

Options
After I have backed Alliance and Leicester up in the past when people have been ranting about them, I have to hold my hands up and say I was wrong and Alliance and Leicester are actually a bunch of thieving idiots (I don't want to swear on here :D)

Last Thursday morning I paid a cheque into my account for £500, I have checked my internet banking each day as I normally do and today is the first time my Available Balance was £630 which meant that the cheque was now available for withdrawl.

I went to the cash point earlier and again my available balance was £630, so I withdrew £200 then when I got home I transferred £300 to my wifes bank account.

I have now just had a row with Alliance and Leicester because it turns out that the cheque hasn't actually cleared for withdrawl without receiving a charge until tomorrow. When I phoned A&L the phone banking also told me that my available balance was £130 which is correct as I had moved £500 out of it

I was then told that I was actually £70 overdrawn and the £300 transfer won't go through until tomorrow but because I have gone overdrawn I will receive a charge of £5 tonight and a further £25 for making a transfer of unavailable funds.

So in total I am going to be charged £30 for spending my money that the bank said was available to me to spend.

Bunch of thieves the lot of them

Contact the banking ombudsman. You should not be able to withdraw uncleared funds or you would have been able to take the money out the same day that the cheque went in right?

I have phoned them back to try and speak to someone who knew what they were talking about and when I told her that I was told that the terms and conditions had changed and I should have received a new copy about 2 months ago she informed me that no such thing has happened and was rather apologetic to me.

She also added that if I call her back tomorrow she will try and refund the charges as a one off gesture of goodwill as they can refund up to £25 every 12 months for everyone. This might be handy for anyone else who's been charged a one off charge in the past.

Thanks Cranky, I will look into that tomorrow morning and find out where I stand regarding this.
