Not really... I'm telling you what the lenders see... if his default is settled and correctly marked as such then it's not stopping him getting a mortgage. My DH has a settled default on his from 3 years ago (banks error but I can't convince husband to make the effort to have it removed *sigh*) And we've remortgaged not once but TWICE with that on his account...

So... getting a mortgage is not impossible if the default is settled.

Other lenders will see him as an increased risk because of it - I don't make those rules BTW - I'm just trying to explain them to you. His score of 800 means nothing - aforementioned husband has a score of 950... with a settled default. He also got 0% credit at one point when his rating was alledgedly under 700 - go figure.
The way forward is to pay off any debts he has, if he has none then get a credit card or two, use them a little each month and PAY THEM IN FULL so as not to incur any charges. Save the amount he'd be paying on a mortgage each month - his rent where he is now - the bigger his deposit the better the deal he'll get when he does get a mortgage.
Oh and a single missed or late payment doesn't hugely affect credit either... I have one from changing banks where the new bank hadn't put my DD in place before the old cancelled the old DD and despite making a payment over the phone on the day I got a "late" marker... my "score" is still in the high 900s... they mean less than you think.
What he needs to do is build a "history" showing that he's managing credit - especially if the only thing on his file is his old mobile phone...

Oddly - if he has no credit then his "score" will be pretty low because there is no proof of him managing credit... When young (and before I became foolish) I had fair savings and went to get a pc on 0% and was refused despite having more than that in my savings... why? Because I'd never shown I could manage credit - my files were blank.
