To answer equitydealer's q's specifically.
I'm tied in to my current mortgage provider for the next 8 years unfortunately. I can leave but the penalties would be prohibitive really.
I've already done the budget thing thanks to Martin's book and lots of good advice here.
Good question regarding investing. I'd say I'm cautious yet open minded about it. If the prices fall then I lose some of my money if I understand it right.
I'd probably prefer to stick to savings but, being open minded, I'd be interested to hear people's thoughts regarding the share investing approach. How risky is it?

I would suggest you first get the savings side sorted out Alun, and then do some research into share investing.
Otherwise you could run the risk of become terminally confused
