Currently have a ford focus estate which is costing me about £150 in petrol a month to get back and forth to work am thinking of changing to something more economical. Family of 4, 2 kids under 7y .
can you trade in for a used car under scrappage scheme or is this just for new cars?
Any recommendations (i am trying to find a more local job!)
travel approx 35 miles a day some motorway driving

Scrappage is only applicable to new cars miaoww.
I take it from that question your car is around 10year old?
Do you know how much it is worth as a trade in?
What price range are you in for another car?
There are some small diesels around which would give you better mpg, like vw polo which should fit a small family of 4, with your 2 kids being under 7 years

    How about a Fabia Estate.
Greenline version has a 1.4 diesel engine and does about 70 to the gallon I think. In terms of space inside its got similar bootspace to the focus estate but slightly smaller interior space. From a tax perspective it hits the lowest band so about £35 a year to tax.
Drives well and its a good compromise if you are looking for a small car thats not too small. With 2 kids you dont want to go too small. Kids get bigger and louder so a bit of space isnt a bad thing.

Nissan Note is an ideal car for a family your size and their Diesel engines give a decent MPG. There are good deals around as they recently released a facelift model so the 'older' are discounted. They also get good reviews of you believe them.

    Think about keeping it.

If the car runs well, you'll not really 'know' what you're buying & won't move into a much newer vehicle, for £1000. You might find a smaller engined car, but NOT much of a fuel saving, in real terms.

This might be a not so Moneysaving exercise, in the long run.

Too f****g ugly for anyone in their right mind. The spec is great, loads of good bits on the better models. Yes, Renault diesel engine is economical but,........ NO

I agree, what mpg are you getting? what engine size is it?, a focus too big?

My advice without the above detail would be to STICK, ;)
