I hope by changing the meter for me or changing tarrif this means I am tied to them in any way.

You will not be tied to npower in anyway by having your meter changed and switching to their standard tarrif. I had mine changed and switched to British Gas 2 weeks later last summer.

So about 10 bedrooms and 19 rads! Not perhaps so far out on that consumption after all.
Due to age, no cavity wall insulation is possible. I think the best thing you can do is to get some more double glazing in the rooms that are heated the most, and ensure that you have plenty of loft insulation. And get rid of the Economy 7 of course.
A modern condensing boiler would be more efficient, but it wouldn't justify replacing if the old one is still doing the job OK for now.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • Thanks for your replies, I dont feel so bad and I intend to improve things soon.
  • Cor blimey! thats some house! On that basis your consumption will be high. Macman has given good advice about more insulation.

Hello Starfish, I know how you feel - we too have an Economy 7 electric meter which is sucking out 7000 kw/h a year. I phoned up today and asked the elec company to come and replace it, which they are doing next week for £52. We have 18 radiators but our gas usage is only 28,000 kw/h year (and most are single). I thought that was high! I am in the process of putting insulation in the loft to see if that will help. I dont leave gas on all day though unlike you but i fire it up between 5am - 9am and 3pm and 9pm so maybe this is making a difference?

Another thought, we have loads (and I mean loads) of those recessed spotlights - the old skool mahoosive ones and I wonder if they are an electricity eating monster?
  • I think my main problem is the staircase in the middle of the house, as soon as the kids open doors to go in/out the heat wooshes straight up, and its staircase with spindles.

I have just been right up stairs and closed all the doors and put some rugs down at the doors. to try and stop the heat escaping into the rooms up there.
  • I think those recessed lights are an energy eating monster.

I also reckon that it can be a mistake to have the heating coming on twice a day instead of set lower all day - we got more manageable bills doing the latter and were warmer.
