To qualify for SSP you have to have had average earnings of at least £95 a week in the eight weeks before you are sick and to have at least 4 consecutive days of sickness during which no work was done. If you qualify what you are paid is based on qualifying days. A qualifying day is usually a day that you would normally work but it can be based on any number of days from one to seven a week. You would need to check with your employer to be certain of your qualifying days. Provided that you have not been off sick in the last eight weeks then you would get nothing for the first three qualifying days (called waiting days ) and after that you would be paid at the rate of £79.15 a week with part weeks paid by dividing this by the number of qualifying days in the week and paying this for each qualifying day. So if you had one day due in the first week you would get one quarter of £79.15. SSP would continue for a maximum of 28 weeks, though this would be different if you had been off in the eight weeks before this sickness.
