CHKDSK runs at startup, possible bad sectors.

ok i run windows 7

recently my laptp decided its going to start running CHKDSK at startup 70% of the time (havnt been able to suss out why not all the time) without me prompting it to do so, it scans, returns no errors and boots every time, ive not noticed any changes in windows and havnt installed anything since this started

i run avira and MWB and both return no results so dont think its a virus

im considering running hijack this but i dont think its a virus as i am rather vigilant with this stuff.

anyways back to the point, i did abit of digging and could find any reason for this to happen on windows 7 without throwing up errors, just now i got a windows action centre thingy message telling me there were possible bad sectors.

i cant see why chkdsk wouldnt have thrown this up so im scanning with the /r function now just to check

ive not really ever dealt with bad sectors though, not come across them tbh so what happens when chkdsk throws u an error, will it be fixed automatically or will i have to do something?

thanks for the advice

  • sounds like maintenance scheduling is enabled.

as for bad sectors, the system should be able to ignore them and never store any data there.

I'd take it back and ask for a new hdd to be installed, if problems are occurring the odds are they will only get wosre over time.

yeh i thought about that i dont particularly want a reducing hdd size considering its filling up over time

how do you disable the scheduling?

i cant believe ive never actually dealt with this considering ive bult and repaired pcs for a good few years now, as a hobby mind you.

  • I'd say it's unlikely to be the result of malicious software, as CHKDSK is usually invoked on the next boot when previously the computer hasn't shut down correctly with data still being written to the disk, which obviously leads to corruption.

You're probably best off starting by identifying the manufacturer of the hard drive and checking on their website for a diagnostics tool to analyse the S.M.A.R.T information that the drive reports.

Bad Sectors aren't the deathknell of the hard drive completely as CHKDSK should identify the sectors and mark them as being unusable, allowing the filesystem to continue to use the drive as normal.
